1962 Herreshoff Far East modified H 28 ketch

The original 1942 Herreshoff H-28 was a very popular design – well known for her offshore capabilities and cruising comfort.  Over the years the H-28 and its variants were built at a number of yards including Cheoy Lee Yachts.  Some were built by individuals, and some by. About 99 of this modified version of the H-28 were built by Far East Yacht Builders in Japan.  Arua is hull no. 30 from that line.  It is slightly longer than the original H-28, has higher shear, a bowsprit, and a raised and stepped house that provides full headroom. Her mainmast is 2'9" taller and is masthead rigged. Arua’s mainmast was replaced in 2003 by Svendsen’s Boat Works.

The hull of the Far East Yacht built modified H-28 is double-planked Philippine mahogany, copper-riveted to 1 1/2" sided x 1 1/2" molded bent Japanese oak (Keyaki frames on about 12" centers). The inner planking is diagonal 3/8" and the outer planks are 5/8" carvel for a net 1" shell. The keel, stern deadwood, stern post, floors, clamp shelves and knees are Yakal, while the rudder is Japanese oak.

Below decks she features African mahogany and teak joinery, with great thought to practicality, storage and convenience.  The separate dog house provides for ample room in the forward double berth and she is outfitted with amenities to make for comfortable weekends away with family or offshore cruising.

Arua is in excellent condition for her age. She has been re-powered with a Yanmar 30 hp diesel engine in 2012, has a new fuel tank and the standing rigging and lifelines are relatively new. Her outstanding bright work alone shows how well she has been maintained.  This is a great opportunity to get into a classic that is fully fit and ready for all your sailing adventures.
