1987 Santa Cruz 50

Richmond, California

$219,000

Deception is the last of the Santa Cruz 50’s produced by Bill Lee, the “Fast Is Fun” Wizard of Santa Cruz. The SC 50’s were modelled after the original yacht Merlin that set the 1976 Transpac record that held for 20 years. Today the Santa Cruz 50’s are generally said to be the best boat to do the Transpac or Pacific Cup races based on their winning combination of speed, stability, ease of handling and below deck comfort. And whereas most boats race in divisions with a broad array designs and ratings, the SC 50’s and 52’s generally race as a single division within a narrow range of ratings.

As the last SC 50 built, Deception has features not found on other SC 50’s. She was the only SC 50 built new with an open transom which adds a level of cockpit spaciousness. She also lacks the structural box that obstructs the cabin floor on all other SC 50’s. This opens up the interior and gives a level floor the full length of the cabin – something much appreciated when you are loading sails below without having to climb over “the box.” Another unique feature is her deck is a light weight carbon deck, an innovation that was being developed at the time. Also, her mast is placed 9 inches forward for improved upwind performance. Finally, she sports an elliptical keel and a modified rudder with a titanium rudder shaft.

Deception has provided many miles of wonderful, exciting sailing since launch. The boat has proven to be one of the best having been on the podium the last four Hawaii races.

The boat is turn key ready to go to Hawaii again lacking for nothing mechanically, safety or equipment wise.

The boat is also held in an LLC so for anyone wanting to keep her in California the LLC is available.
