2000 J Boats J/120
Overview
HiJinx is an exceptionally well-maintained and extensively updated J/120 racer/cruiser, combining proven performance with comfortable cruising accommodations and excellent offshore capability.
The J/120 has long been one of J/Boats’ most successful performance racer/cruisers—a boat capable of competing seriously on the racecourse while remaining easily managed and genuinely comfortable for cruising. HiJinx is a particularly attractive example, benefiting from substantial recent investment in the systems that matter most on a performance sailboat of this age.
More than $50,000 has been invested in major upgrades alone over the past several years, including complete new standing rigging by KKMI in 2025, extensive B&G and Raymarine electronics upgrades, a new high-capacity Balmar alternator and charging system, new three-blade Max-Prop, new interior upholstery, beautifully refinished interior woodwork and cabin sole, and a new offshore dodger. Numerous additional maintenance and modernization projects have been completed throughout the boat.
Her 2025 standing-rigging replacement at KKMI represented approximately a $20,000 investment and included the forestay, backstay and shrouds. The hydraulic backstay was rebuilt, spreader tips replaced, and the mast strengthened at the spinnaker exit sheave. Complete new mast wiring and lighting fixtures were installed in 2024.
Electronics received approximately $12,000 in upgrades during 2024, centered around a B&G Triton Edge system with Triton displays. Raymarine equipment includes an EV-100 underdeck autopilot, Axiom chartplotter, RAY73 VHF and AIS700 transmit/receive transponder. Onboard Wi-Fi allows vessel data to be transmitted to external devices.
HiJinx retains the performance equipment and sail inventory expected of a serious J/120, with dedicated racing headsails and asymmetric spinnakers as well as separate cruising and delivery sails. Her sail inventory allows a new owner to continue racing immediately while retaining a practical cruising configuration.
Below deck, HiJinx stands apart from many J/120s. New upholstery was installed in 2024, while the teak sole, moldings, saloon table, companionway ladder and master stateroom were refinished. Additional LED lighting brightens the galley and saloon, while added cabinetry provides useful storage without sacrificing the light, functional character of the original J/Boat interior.
On deck, a new high-quality offshore dodger with Strataglass was added in 2024. All hatches and windows have been rebedded, the bowsprit seals replaced, and all six winches were completely torn down and serviced.
Whether the next owner intends to race around the buoys, compete offshore, cruise the California coast or combine all three, HiJinx offers the speed and handling that made the J/120 famous with the benefit of extensive recent investment and modernization.

HiJinx features a spacious and practical interior with excellent natural light and ventilation.
The main saloon offers opposing upholstered settees with storage behind and above, complemented by a centerline dining table with folding leaves. With the leaves folded, the arrangement leaves an unusually open passage through the saloon; when opened, the table provides a substantial dining area for crew and guests.
Forward is a large berth surrounded by attractive wood hull lining, shelving and storage. Additional sleeping accommodations are located aft, with the saloon settees providing further berth capacity when required.
An enclosed head is located forward of the main saloon.
Interior highlights include:

- Blue-gray upholstered settees and berth cushions
- Folding centerline dining table

Additional investments include the Balmar charging system, mast repairs and rewiring, interior refinishing, LED lighting, sanitation-system rebuild, rebedded hatches and windows, bowsprit seals, winch servicing and numerous other projects.
The result is a J/120 that has had substantial attention paid to its rig, electronics, electrical system, propulsion, interior, deck hardware and water-tightness, rather than simply receiving cosmetic updates.
